Mourners bid farewell to Fernandez

Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez was remembered Thursday as a larger than life figure during a homily at his funeral. “Jose was too good for this league,” the Rev. Jose Alvarez said. “He’s going to a higher league.” Fernandez, a 24-yearold, two-time all-star, died early Sunday along with two friends in a boating accident off Miami Beach. His funeral service lasted more than two hours. Those in attendance included Major League Baseball commission­er Rob Manfred, current and former Marlins players and two Hall of Famers, Marlins executives Tony Perez and Andre Dawson. The private service drew about 300 mourners, who nearly filled the large sanctuary at St. Brendan Catholic Church in Miami.

Cowboy gets 10 games

FRISCO, Texas — Randy Gregory has been suspended 10 games by the NFL on top of the four-game ban the Dallas defensive end was already serving for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. The announceme­nt Thursday was expected after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Gregory had withdrawn his appeal. Gregory won’t be eligible until Week 16, before Dallas’ Monday night game against Detroit on Dec. 26. Gregory is a second-year player from Nebraska.

Cavs interested in Garnett

Kevin Garnett never imagined himself coaching. Cleveland Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue is making him consider it. Lue said he has discussed a position on his staff with Garnett, the 15-time all-star who recently retired after 21 seasons in the NBA. The 40-year-old, who played with a relentless­ness and intensity from the time he broke into the league as a teenager, said in the past that he wanted to stay tied to basketball.

Second coach loses job

A British newspaper investigat­ion led to a second soccer coach getting fired Thursday. Two days after Sam Allardyce lost his job as England manager, second-tier club Barnsley fired assistant coach Tommy Wright. Wright was filmed apparently accepting an envelope which the Daily Telegraph said contained 5,000 pounds ($6,500) to help place players at the club. .

Newgarden leaving team

INDIANAPOL­IS — Josef Newgarden has told Ed Carpenter Racing he won’t return to the IndyCar team next season. The American driver is thought to be highly coveted by Team Penske, which has been in limbo over the status of former Indianapol­is 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya. It could lead to a seat swap, with Newgarden going to Penske and Montoya moving to ECR.
