Snowfall expected in several areas

-

Significant snowfall was expected in several areas of southern B.C. overnight Saturday.

Environment Canada issued snowfall warnings for the Fraser Valley, Fraser Canyon and Nicola regions, with up to 25 centimetres expected by Sunday morning along the Coquihalla Highway between Hope and Merritt.

In Metro Vancouver, an Arctic front is expected to bring cold and windy conditions and light snow beginning overnight Sunday.

Temperatures may reach overnight lows of -5 C and could continue to drop through Tuesday, with more significant snowfall Wednesday and Thursday.

The weather system will also likely affect regions across the South Coast, including Vancouver Island, Howe Sound, the Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast.

Environment Canada is reminding drivers to be prepared to adjust their driving with changing road conditions. City crews in Vancouver were scheduled to work late Saturday and Sunday to salt and brine the city’s major routes. Vancouver’s snow fleet includes 44 trucks capable of applying salt to roads and there is 1,500 tonnes of salt in stock.

The city added two new brine units this year that cover more street surface in one pass that allow city crews to apply a faster spray. Equipment is also available to salt bikeways.

Property owners and tenants are reminded they are responsible to clear snow and ice from the full width of sidewalks surrounding their property by 10 a.m. the morning after a snowfall. Failing to do so can result in a fine.
