Homan, Jones to meet in final for Canada Cup

- Kirk Penton

Sunday afternoon’s Canada Cup women’s final will feature two good curling teams.

They’re so good, in fact, that they’ve already clinched the prize that the winner of this event is supposed to get.

It’ll be Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones versus Ottawa’s Rachel Homan for the 24th time, and since both have already locked up berths in next year’s Roar of the Rings Olympic trials event in Ottawa, they will simply play for the glory and the prestige of the Canada Cup trophy — not to mention $14,000 and a trip to the Continental Cup in Las Vegas next month.

Homan will also be looking to defend the Canada Cup crown she captured last year in Grande Prairie, Alta.

Homan, along with Emma Miskew, Joanne Courtney and Lisa Weagle, advanced to the final with a 9-4 thumping of Winnipeg’s Kerri Einarson in Saturday afternoon’s semifinal at Westman Communications Group Place.

“They were really strong,” Homan said of her squad, which shot an impressive 89 per cent overall. “They made everything. We were communicating about everything.”

Einarson knocked off Edmonton’s Val Sweeting 8-6 in a tiebreaker on Saturday morning to get to the semifinal, scoring three in the 10th to secure the victory.

Homan (twice) and Jones (once) have won three of the last four Scotties Tournament of Hearts and they are No. 3 and 4, respectively, on this year’s World Curling Tour money list.

They have played 23 times since their first meeting in 2007, according to curlingzone. com, and Jones has a 12-11 edge thanks to her 8-5 round robin win over Homan on Friday night. Homan, however, has won six of the last eight meetings.

Jones earned a place in Sunday’s final by placing first in the round robin with a 5-1 record.

The Roar of the Rings berth that was supposed to be awarded to the winner this weekend will now be determined in May based on Canadian Team Ranking System points.
