Man, 53, dies after fight outside South Delta bar

- LORA GRINDLAY

A 53-year-old Delta man is dead after a fight outside a bar early Sunday.

A news release from Delta police said cops were called to a fight behind the Rose and Crown Pub in the 1200-block 56th Street in South Delta at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday.

When police arrived they found a 53-yearold man unconscious and unresponsive.

“Despite efforts of paramedics to resuscitate him, he died at hospital. The deceased is a local resident and police have conducted the notification of next of kin,” the release said. “Those involved in the altercation fled prior to police arrival.”

An emotional Shelley Metrow, owner of the Rose and Crown, said she had known the victim for 30 years. “He was just a really nice guy. He would do anything for anybody. Anything,” she said.

He had been at the pub with his daughter, who is in her 20s. His daughter left earlier than him. “I feel for his family and his daughter,” said Metrow. “She said goodbye to her dad and four hours later he was gone. It’s horrible.”

Metrow said her bar employs doormen on weekends. She added: “Whatever happened happened outside our lounge door, in the parking lot between us and the grocery store. It happened after closing.”

Police have seized surveillance video and said two males are being questioned.
