Coquitlam boy’s book honours Santa’s superheroes

- TRACY SHERLOCK tsherlock@postmedia.com

When Nathan McTaggart was three years old, he asked his dad Keven what would happen if Santa got stuck in the chimney.

They talked about it together and came up with a story about firefighters saving Santa so he could carry on with his gift-giving adventure on Christmas Eve.

Over the years, the story grew. A couple of years ago, when Nathan was about eight years old, he asked his dad if they could make the story into a book. Santa and His Super Hero is the result.

“Nathan has been wanting this done for a while now and he is so excited,” Keven said. “He loves telling the stories about it.”

The book is illustrated by Nathan’s class from last year at Harbour View Elementary in Coquitlam. It’s a cute book with colourful illustrations and a cute story about Santa’s misadventures.

Nathan, who is now 10 and in Grade 5, has taken his copy to fire halls to have firefighters sign it — he says they are his superheroes.

Nathan says he is very excited to see his book in print, “especially since I illustrated it with my class.”

Keven and Nathan are offering the ebook free to all students and are also offering print copies for sale on Amazon.com. (The book will be on Amazon.ca in a few weeks, Keven said.) All proceeds from the book will be donated to the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund.

Todd Schierling, secretary-treasurer of the fund, said in a statement that they are grateful for the McTaggarts’ support.

“Their ingenuity, passion and extreme efforts to help the Burn Fund really is inspiring, and we consider Nathan one of the youngest superheroes we have had the pleasure of knowing while supporting our cause,” Barrett said.
