City hall big part of the West End parking problem

-

Bumping up the cost of a parking permit in Vancouver’s West End by 300 per cent will not help the parking problem. The problem is city hall.

If there is a parking shortage, why has city hall taken whole blocks up for bike racks, planted areas on corners that obstruct drivers’ view? Or blocking streets off so residents and visitors to the West End have to make a four-block detour?

I have lived in the West End since 1967 and every year it gets worse.

Why no criticism?

Japan, Korea, China and most Asian countries refuse to take refugees from the Middle East. As a matter of fact, they are reluctant to take any refugees.

Why are these policies not given the same criticism as the West, which is doing its best to accept legitimate asylum seekers?

Why are they afraid to criticize these countries? Daniel Wright, Abbotsford

GOP must step in

With every breath they take, and every move they make, the Trump administration in the U.S. continues to confound belief. Not only are they attempting to govern by ill-informed, impetuous whim, they keep telling outrageous lies, even when confronted with unequivocal evidence to the contrary.

Alternate facts and reality may go with the territory for a lot of the people whose lives revolve around Twitter and not much else, but surely the level heads in the Republican Party realize by now unless they manage to start weaning the president from this obsession, get him to start facing real facts and acting like a real president instead of an entitled adolescent, he will likely bring them all down.

As Senator Chuck Schumer recently noted, their incompetence is staggering.

Need a story on this

Re: Gun charge thrown out over court delay.

How can a highly paid prosecutor not bring an accused to trial in time knowing it would result in the charges being stayed?

The Supreme Court ruled that trials must begin within 18 months of charges being laid. The reasons given for the delay was the Crown did not disclose police documents in a time established by the system. How about a followup story on how this happened so that it can’t happen again?

Thanks, Howie!

Re: Simon Fraser University full-page ad in Province Sports on Feb. 1.

Big kudos to SFU for thanking departed Province sports reporter Howard Tsumura for his outstanding contribution to amateur sports. To use the poignant words from their ad: “Behind Every Story — Passion, Devotion, Class. Thank you for inspiring generations of student-athletes by sharing their stories of courage, extraordinary achievement and community service.”

Howard didn’t just do this for SFU, he did it for all student athletes across B.C. He knew virtually everyone and everything connected to student athletics, and I can’t imagine there is another Howard waiting in the wings.

Thank you Howard, and thank you Province for dedicating important real estate in the sports section to cover student athletics. I hope that can continue even though finding another Howie will be next to impossible. Bruce Shepherd, West Vancouver
