Cinderella Project makes grad dreams come true

It took more than a magic wand, but the graduation dreams of about 190 Metro Vancouver teens are one step closer to reality, thanks to the Cinderella Project.

Burnaby teen Julianna Lukan tried on six dresses and decided on a turquoise gown that’s a touch more extravagant than what she thought she wanted.

“It’s really pretty,” she said. “It wasn’t the colour I was going for, but my mom talked me into this one.”

With the help of mom Tracy Roy and a volunteer, Lukan also picked out a necklace, bracelet, a clutch and black heels to wear for her big night.

The Cinderella Project, which started in 2000, provides deserving Grade 12 students with an outfit for their high school graduation. It also provides scholarships and services such as career counselling and resume-building.

Lukan, who plans to study child and youth care at Douglas College in the fall, said it was a relief not to have to worry about the costs of graduation, which can add up.
