Call goes out for Vancouver’s next generation of girl rockers

- — Shawn Conner

It’s a fundraiser

All proceeds from the evening go toward Girls Rock Camp Vancouver. The non-profit is part of the Girls Rock Camp Alliance, which was founded at the initiative of Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls in Portland, Ore., in 2007. Girls Rock Camp Vancouver runs a weeklong summer camp dedicated to turning out the next generation of (female-identifying) rockers and is open to youths ages eight to 17. The fundraiser is all ages.

Ashley Shadow

Four acts are scheduled to play the fundraiser, including Ashley Shadow. It's a recording and live project from singer/songwriter Ashley Webber, who released an eponymous Ashley Shadow album last year. Allmusic.com praised the album's “engaging, gritty mix of acoustic and electric, strong and vulnerable.”

Supermoon

Supermoon's eight-song, double, seven-inch record Playland, which is out on Mint Records, is one of the sunnier releases from last year. The band, also on the fundraiser's bill, recently played the South X Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas.

Scum Laude

And then there's the terrifically named Scum Laude, a group of 16-year-olds, including Hannah Turner. Turner is one of the organizers of Elastic Collective,“a queer + girl youth artist-collective based in Vancouver,” according to the collective's tumblr page.

Raffle prizes

If the music and the cause aren't enough, the fundraiser is offering raffle tickets with prizes from Live Nation, John Fluevog Shoes, pieces from jewelry designer Anita Sikma, the Nimbus School of Recording Arts and lots more.
