CBC to rebroadcast The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration
The Tragically Hip’s momentous final show of last year’s Man Machine Poem tour is getting an encore broadcast on CBC-TV next month. The national broadcaster says it plans to re-air The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration commercial-free on June 24. Running nearly three hours, the Kingston, Ont., concert last August featured Gord Downie and the band performing their biggest hits to a sold-out hometown crowd. The show also proved a ratings boon for the network. It drew an average of 4.04 million viewers, making it the CBC’s most popular broadcast last year.
MMVAs name hosts
Canadian vocal powerhouse Alessia Cara is pairing with Joe Jonas to host this year’s iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards. The Brampton, Ont.-raised singer behind hits including Scars to Your Beautiful and Here is making her debut as an awards show host. Jonas returns to the MMVAs after sharing hosting duties with the other members of the Jonas Brothers back in 2009. The televised street party in Toronto is set to feature performances by Jonas and his band, DNCE, Lorde, Imagine Dragons and solo artist Julia Michaels, one of the songwriters behind Justin Bieber’s Sorry and Selena Gomez’s new single, Bad Liar. The MMVAs will air on Much, CTV and stream through the iHeartRadio app on June 18.
Widow pens letter
Chris Cornell’s widow has written a letter addressed to the late Soundgarden frontman days after he took his own life. Vicky Cornell writes in the note published online by Billboard that she’s sorry she didn’t “see what happened to you that night.” She added,“I’m sorry you were alone, and I know that was not you, my sweet Christopher.” While she says she’s “broken,” Cornell says she “will stand up” for her late husband and take care of their two children.
Cornell was pronounced dead on May 18 after being found unresponsive in his Detroit hotel room. The Wayne County medical examiner’s office said Cornell, 52, had hanged himself. A full autopsy and results of toxicology tests are pending.
Stalker sentenced
A man who broke into Sandra Bullock’s home in 2014 and forced the Oscar-winning actress to hide in her closet while calling police has been sentenced to continued mental health treatment and probation after pleading no contest to charges of felony stalking and burglary. Joshua James Corbett entered the plea May 24 and was also ordered to stay away from the actress and not attempt to contact her for 10 years. He was arrested inside of Bullock’s residence in June 2014.
