Lottery prize house is designer’s delight

Five-bedroom home has contemporary look

- SHAWN CONNER

Among the grand prizes in this year’s Hometown Heroes Lottery is the one-time residence of a home designer — and his touches are showcased throughout.

Located just 11 blocks from the beach in White Rock, the five-bedroom house is remarkable for its West Coast modern exterior and well thought-out interior.

Four bedrooms are on the main floor, and the great room, kitchen and living area are on the second floor. Two decks, — one off the second floor and another on the roof — take advantage of the location, which offers views of Semiahmoo Bay and Mount Baker.

For the interior design, the lottery once again turned to Debbie Heal of Sunrae Design, who used bold colours and touches of nature that both contrast and complement the sleek lines of the contemporary exterior. Those nature-oriented features include paintings and sculptures of birds and trees, with colours that match interior accents.

On the main floor, the master bedroom blends grey walls and carpet with a purple accent wall and art. In one of the other two bedrooms, Heal created a girls’ nest with a feather lamp and pink accent wall.

A chandelier hangs over the tub in the ensuite, which is as large some Yaletown condos. It also features a large shower with a rain shower head and white marble flooring, as well as drawer pulls and accessories festooned with rhinestones and teardrop crystals hanging from the mirrors.

Also on the main floor is a sitting room with oversized windows that pull in plenty of natural light. The laundry room, meantime, has tiled flooring and a bench, while the two-car garage has a glass-paned door, which again, allows for natural light.

The second floor is home to the spacious open-concept great room, dining area and kitchen, and has 11-foot-high ceilings and wide-plank hardwood flooring. The kitchen, which Heal has accented with splashes of yellow, features marble countertops, a six-burner gas stove, island and Electrolux side-by-side freezer/fridge.

Lighting fixtures help delineate the floor’s different functions, with a chandelier giving a more formal air to the dining area and a contemporary light fixture illuminating the living area, which features a gas fireplace.

The second-floor deck is accessible from both the living area and office/den, while the roof deck is reachable from the second-floor deck.

The basement, roughed in for a suite, and has an additional bedroom with a full bath, finished rec room with a wet bar, fireplace and custom-designed wine display.

The prize package is valued at $2.5 million and includes $120,000 in furnishings, mostly from La-Z-Boy and The Wickertree.

The home is one of six grand prizes offered in the lottery.

The other prize packages from which the top winner can choose are valued at $2.3 million and include a house in Ocean Park; a townhome with a three-car garage and elevator in Kelowna; an oceanfront yacht suite in Sooke Point; and what lottery organizers are calling an “income-for-life package.” This includes condos in Richmond and Vancouver, both of which can be rented.

The top winner in the lottery, which supports the VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation and the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, also has the option of taking a $2.1-million tax-free cash prize.

There are an additional 3,100 prizes up for grabs in the lottery. Tickets are three for $75, six for $100 or 20 for $275.
