BIG-TIME DRAGS AT MISSION THIS WEEKEND
This weekend is both happy and sad for me. The good is the 7th Annual Centennial Show & Shine at my old high school in Coquitlam; the bad is this is the second year of no Old Time Drags at Eagle Raceway in Ashcroft.
Tonight I will get to see lots of the old crowd from my school days and see what amazing cars they have built over the years.
After the show, the reunion tour will continue as we plan to head to Me-N-Ed’s pizza where I worked for a long time delivering pizzas.
As for those cancelled drag races, for many years we would road trip up the Fraser Canyon for a wonderful day of races with cars from all over the province. Such a shame the track no longer operates, but that serves as a reminder that all tracks need our support if you want to see them holding races in the future.
Our most famous local track, Mission Raceway Park, has a long history of success, but it, too, was shut down for many years from what can only be described as bureaucratic bungling. The track is awesome, sitting alongside the Fraser River in Mission, and includes a road course and a drag strip, meaning there is racing almost every weekend during the car season.
This weekend is a big one for the track with the Lordco NHRA B.C. Nationals, Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series taking place today through Sunday. The top alcohol dragsters run 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, with first round eliminations slated for noon on Sunday.
Last weekend I spent Friday and Saturday at the Coastal Swapmeet and had a great time seeing old friends and meeting new customers. I also made it to the fun car show at the Whip restaurant, featuring cool cars, live music and great food.
This weekend is chock-full of racing, shows and swap meets.
Pick one or more that suits you and make sure you bring a kid or two.
