Spend Canada Day at a car show

Doorwarz V racing, return of Fordnutz Cougar Claw-In among events

Canada Day is upon us and our great country is turning 150 (though I must say she doesn’t look a day older than 125!).

There are a couple of great local car shows on Canada Day for you to wave the flag at, along with some others across the province.

Jelly Bean Autocrafters has been putting on a show for 12 years and is always a good event as the two owners are dedicated carnuts. Get there early as, other than the one in Hope, there are no other shows in town on Canada Day proper.

On Sunday, two great events happen locally: the Greater Vancouver Motorsport Pioneers Society show at North Van’s Shipbuilders Square; and the return after many years of the Fordnutz Cougar Claw-In at Fort Langley.

The other big event this weekend is Doorwarz V at Mission Raceway Park. This is a pretty big event for the track and some of the quickest cars of the season will be there to race.

Last weekend, I went to a private car show at the Delta View care home in Ladner. The show had a couple of cars designated as ‘1 of 1’ cars, meaning that once all the options and colours and interior materials are factored in, they are the only car optioned exactly this way. One was a black 1967 Mustang GTA with vinyl roof and air conditioning. The other was a 1967 Cougar XR-7 with the 6.5-litre V8, four-speed manual transmission and green leather interior. Very cool.

On Sunday, I drove the old truck out to the Downtown Chilliwack show. The sky was clear and it was hot as I wandered around snapping pics and seeing many cool cars. Then I came upon Doc Kinney and his just-finished, stellar 1957 Chevy. Over the top! Not to be outdone, was Campbell Murray’s Mustang Mach 1 with the dual quad Cobrajet 428 engine. It looked great at the show and I have a memorable afternoon of photographing him doing burnouts in the car. Richard from Hot Rods and Classics showed up in his 427 Camaro and I love seeing that car.
