Tailor-made role for Suits’ leading man

CLOTHES DRIVE: Actor finds himself cut out for philanthropy

- SARAH HANLON

Clothes do make the man, which is why Suits’ leading man, producer and director Patrick J. Adams, is lending his time to Moores’ annual Canadian Suit Drive. All this month, the clothier will help collect gently used professional attire to help assist at-risk men and women who want to join the workforce.

“When you’re trying to enter the workforce and make a good impression, bolster your confidence, it makes a big difference to put on a suit,” he says. “It makes you stand up a little taller and it changes the way people perceive you.

Postmedia Network caught up with the 35-year-old to chat about why it’s important to use your celebrity for important causes, what it’s like co-starring with Prince Harry’s girlfriend, Megan Markle, and working in his hometown, Toronto.

Law suits

I’m much more of a jeans and T-shirt kind of a guy but a suit, I have learned, is an essential part of the working world. I became an actor so I wouldn’t have to dress like that so the irony is that I found myself seven years into a show about suits.

Working in the six

Oh, it is great — I mean it was a little strange at first. When I left Toronto, I thought I was probably only going to come back to visit family. It was a bit odd at first to have my first major job in Toronto, but I get to see friends and family and spend summers up in Georgian Bay, Ont.

Best day off

Trinity Bellwoods! Wander around that park — throw a Frisbee in there. I guess my other favourite thing is to go to Toronto Island, but that’s off the menu this year. It is a fun city, there is a lot happening here. It is very exciting.

Why Suits resonates

It’s hard to describe why people are drawn to what they are, but I think the thing they are most drawn to is the people.

Especially with the Mike Ross character. There is something really admirable about his ascent into power and him doing everything it takes in order to succeed. People can relate to that and want to see how it all ends for him.

Markle’s sparkle

We’ve been working together so long, she is like a sister to me at this point and the thing she has taught me most about in our time together is the power of philanthropy. Meghan dedicates a huge amount of her time and resources and energy to giving back to people, so when Moores’ Clothing Drive came along I knew it was something she would be really proud of me for.

Season 7 spoilers?

I am just super excited about the season and really grateful to them for letting me direct the 100th episode. It’s going to be a major stepping stone for the show.

Moore suits, please

I’m super excited for people across Canada to hopefully go into their closets and take whatever they are not using anymore down to one of the 126 Moores locations and help us make a difference.
