B.C. Day Long Weekend in Whistler

From Yoga to Red Bull 400 and Everything In-between

- CAROLINE HELBIG

Wondering what to do over the August long weekend? Trying to please the whole family or group of friends? Whistler is your answer. From yoga and mountain workouts to barbecues and outdoor concerts, Whistler will make everyone happy this B.C. Day long weekend.

Does yoga on a standup paddle board sound intriguing? This is just one of hundreds of wellness sessions at Wanderlust Whistler (August 3–6). “With over two hundred and fifty classes spread across Whistler’s majestic valley, Wanderlust offers everything from yoga, meditation and nature hikes to downhill mountain biking, standup paddle boarding and live music,” says Sean Hoess, Co-CEO of Wanderlust. Join in with single sessions, daylong or multi-day passes.

Calling all patio barbecuing chefs. Watch the pros in action at the Bulleit Bourbon Canadian National BBQ Championships. Whistler Creekside is the place to be (August 4–6) where local legends and world champions will be grilling up the yummiest barbecues in Canada. There’s family entertainment throughout the weekend, and the best part—you can sample the mouthwatering fare.

Imagine returning to the office after the long weekend and telling your coworkers you participated in the steepest 400-metre race in the world—running up a ski jump. On August 5, the Red Bull 400 returns to Whistler Olympic Park. “Don’t let the simplicity of the concept fool you; runners will push themselves to the limit with this punishing 400-metre climb on their hands and knees,” says Michelle Leroux, Red Bull spokesperson. Register for solo or relay, or come cheer on the athletes in this exciting event.

Sound a little too extreme? Whistler has walking and hiking adventures for all levels. Catch a gondola up to the alpine trails where wildflowers, lakes, and glaciers will take your breath away. Down in the valley, stroll through Whistler Village with its lovely shops, galleries, restaurants and cafés. Don’t forget to check out the Farmers’ Market on Sunday in the Upper Village.

The free outdoor concert series at Whistler Olympic Plaza has become a local and visitor favourite. There’s an awesome lineup of musicians over the long weekend featuring Elijah Ray, Quixotic, Con Brio, Charlotte Cardin, Ron Artis II + The Truth and Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires. Chill-out or dance the night away, as the music and mountain vistas provide a perfect ending to another fabulous day in Whistler.

With so many diverse activities at Whistler this B.C. Day long weekend, there is something for everyone. For more information, visit whistler.com/ august-long-weekend.
