CARNUT CORNER

WEEKEND SHOWS AND RACES

- Cam Hutchins

DEREK MCNAUGHTON/DRIVING.CA

With upcoming vacation plans, I am not going to attend any local car shows this weekend, but that certainly doesn’t mean you should miss them.

It’s not the busiest show weekend but there are still a number of great events to check out.

Last weekend I got scared off the Friday evening round of races at Mission Raceway Park due to rain in my area, but as it turned out they managed to run lots of races Friday evening. I did make it out Saturday night for the nostalgia Funny cars and was astounded at all the cool cars ripping up the drag strip. I got some great shots of the dragchutes opening and also wandered around the pits to see the details of the cars.

Standouts for me included the 1971-era Mustang Mach I funny car and matching Mustang Mach 1 Tow vehicle. Then there was the Mr. Explosixes funny car that was all painted up in the livery reminiscent of the early ’70s cars. An awesome looking, sounding and running Funny car based on the 1969/70 Mustangs.

Another wicked looking car was the Tiki Warrior, which is based on a mid-’70s Chevrolet Monza. Painted a great colour of green, this is one of my all-time favourite cars from that era.

We all have to keep supporting our local races and car shows. The Mission track is located very close to us in Metro Vancouver so go see some races this summer — and take a kid with you.
