Explore Whistler’s Back-Country Off-Road Style

TAG Whistler’s RZR Tours

- STEVE FISHER

There are many ways to enjoy thew wilderness, but if you’re looking for some excitement along the way, getting behind the wheel of a Polaris RZR should rev up your outdoor experience.

A RZR (pronounced razor) is a four-wheel-drive side-by-side vehicle, which looks like a cross between an ATV and a Jeep. The Adventure Group (TAG) Whistler offers guests the chance to drive or ride in a RZR while exploring Whistler’s mountainous terrain.

RZR side-by-sides have automatic transmissions, and guides start each tour with a tutorial on how to drive them. If you’ve driven any kind of motor vehicle, piloting a RZR should be no problem.

“Essentially, driving a RZR is very similar to driving a car. There is a gas pedal, a brake pedal and a steering wheel,” says TAG’s marketing specialist Karen Brooks.

Guests can rent either two- or four-seater RZR’s, and there are Beginner or Moderate tour options. Beginners will ride on wide forest service roads, while the Moderate tours feature tighter off-road trails.

TAG’s Alpine Sunrise Tour departs at 8:30 a.m., so riders can enjoy the early morning in the mountains. This 2.5-hour tour offers a great chance to see wildlife among the area’s scenic peaks, lakes and lush forests.

The Wilderness Ride provides more of an off-road experience for guests, as your guide highlights favourite natural features along the way. Six two-hour tours run each day.

The BC Tour is considered TAG’s signature RZR tour. Guests have two and a half hours to explore rivers, lakes and lookout points hidden within the coastal rainforest. BC Tours run at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

While the routes offer many great lookout points, “My personal favourite is the Soo Valley looking down on the turquoise blue Soo River… a perspective you can only get on a RZR tour,” says Brooks.

TAG’s RZR tours are held on Cougar and Rainbow Mountains, located just north of Whistler Village. Complimentary shuttles transport guests to and from the trails. Tours run rain or shine, so dress appropriately and expect to get a bit dirty!
