Two more V12 Vanquish Zagato models to see limited production next year

- DAVID BOOTH DRIVING.CA

Capitalizing on the seemingly insatiable desire for “bespoke” luxury sports cars, Aston Martin is releasing two more limited-production Zagato versions of its topof-the-line Vanquish.

Only 28 examples of the Speedster will be available worldwide, and 99 Shooting Brakes — that’s a station wagon to you and me. It was previously announced that there will be 99 Coupes and 99 ragtop Volantes built as well, which brings the total number of Zagatos available to just 325.

All four cars are based on the Vanquish S, and so they are powered by a Aston’s traditional, naturally aspirated V12 with 580 horsepower, mated to a slick-shifting TouchTronic III automatic transmission. Adaptive suspension at all four corners ensures the handling is as dramatic as the styling.

Although Marek Reichman, Aston’s chief creative officer, makes much of the Speedster’s proposed rarity, it is the Shooting Brake that is probably the most daring of the new additions the family. Seating just two but with a Country Squire’s blunt profile, the radical Aston is at once traditional — it’s a wagon, after all — and more dramatic — Ferrari’s similarly named GTC4 Lusso seems tame by comparison.

Deliveries have already started on the Volante and Coupe, while the Speedster and Shooting Brake will enter production in 2018. And yes, a few of the truly devoted have ordered all four.

It’s also worth reminding everyone that Aston Martin’s co-operation with the famed Zagato styling house is steeped in history.

“Zagato’s relationship with Aston Martin began with my grandfather and the DB4 GT Zagato, almost sixty years ago,” said Andrea Zagato, chief executive of Zagato and grandson of Ugo Zagato who started the Milanese coach building business in 1919.

“To have a creative ‘marriage’ thrive for three generations is something as unique as the cars themselves.

“My family name is associated with all kinds of wonderful designs, but for many enthusiasts and collectors around the world, those that combine the Z of Zagato with the wings of Aston Martin are the most special.”
