Sail from Japan to Alaska to Vancouver

Cunard Line announces its lineup for 2019, which includes transpacific and transatlantic cruises

- Aaron Saunders

Cunard Line is prepping one of its largest seasons of cruises on the west and east coasts of North America in 2019, from the line’s first foray into Alaska in two decades, to an increased presence in the Canadian Maritimes.

“The 2019 deployment has the best selection of cruise experiences we have ever offered,” said Josh Leibowitz, senior vice-president, Cunard North America.

“We are thrilled to introduce new itineraries tailored to the North American marketplace. Now represents the perfect time to experience Cunard.”

At the top of the pack, at least as far as British Columbians should be concerned, is a spectacular 17-night transpacific crossing aboard the 2,081-guest Queen Elizabeth. Guests set sail from Yokohama, Japan and head out across the Pacific Ocean bound for Vancouver.

Along the way, Queen Elizabeth finds time to call on the Japanese ports of Aomori and Sapporo, before heading across to Alaska for port stops in Kodiak, Anchorage and Juneau. Queen Elizabeth arrives in Vancouver on May 21, 2019.

This unique voyage is also available as a 27-night cruise that also includes an additional 10 days in Alaska before arriving back in Vancouver on May 31, 2019.

On the transatlantic front, 2019 will see Cunard offer the first transatlantic crossing aboard Queen Mary 2 to feature an assortment of ports of call.

Voyage M921 departs Southampton, England on July 14, 2019. From Southampton, this special one-off, 14-night crossing sails for Liverpool, England and stops in Reykjavik, Iceland for an overnight call. Queen Mary 2 then charts a course for Nova Scotia, where she’ll call on Corner Brook and Halifax before arriving in New York on July 28, 2019.

Because of their unique nature, expect both of the above voyages to sell out very quickly. Cunard just opened bookings on Sept. 15, 2017 for these cruises and much of the line’s 2019 lineup in North America and Europe, so there’s still time to book if you’re just reading about this now.

Cunard’s 2019 season will also see an extended presence in Quebec and the Canadian Maritimes, with overnight calls on Quebec City and five weeklong voyages aboard Queen Mary 2 that depart for Canada and New England from New York.

If you’ve always wanted to sail with Cunard but didn’t want to stray too far from home, the 2019 cruise season looks like the best time to do just that.
