Proposed changes will bring fairness to tax system

- Greg Pyc, Vancouver

Many have spoken out about the proposed changes to the federal tax system. I would like to take this opportunity to share the perspective of construction workers. Our members work hard every day to build B.C. Construction booms and busts. Unlike independent businesses, construction workers can’t share their income among family members during big construction years. They also can’t defer a portion of their income into a tax-free passive investment portfolio that they can access during slow periods.

We cannot allow a vocal minority to prevent us from enacting these balanced changes that will bring fairness to our taxation system. The cost is more than a few votes. It directly affects our government’s ability to invest in the infrastructure our country needs.

Bridge study is unnecessary

It would seem the B.C. NDP is living up to its tax-and-spend mantra. They are going to do another review on the Massey bridge proposal.

That only means they will give their cronies and zombies a free ride with insider cash. There are a dozen binders, five inches thick, filled with past reviews and studies. What’s one more? The definition of insanity comes to mind.

The tunnel right now is a death trap. How many people have lost their lives over the years because it is unsafe? All the bozo Metro Vancouver mayors, except Delta Mayor Lois Jackson, don’t seem to get it. I guess the next time someone is killed in the tunnel, they will all attend the funeral, and say to the grieving families how sorry they are for being so short-sighted.

The vast majority of Metro Vancouver residents want a replacement now, not another review, but the arrogance of the NDP will prevail instead. Removing the tolls got them elected. Not doing anything about the tunnel, now, will come back to bite them.

Trump is unfit to govern

I have to disagree with letter writer Cherryl Katnich, regarding U.S. President Donald Trump. You don’t have to be a mental health expert to realize he is a pathological liar and totally unfit for office. He continues to lie even though there is video proof available to show he is lying.

I find it hard to believe that a country with so many smart and powerful people could have elected a man who is completely without compassion, empathy, and cares very little about anyone or anything except himself and lining his own pockets.

Wealth doesn’t trickle down

Funny, isn’t it, how people like Sun Media columnist Lorne Gunter have convinced middle- and lower-income Canadians to fight tax increases for the wealthiest of Canadians.

In a totally disproven theory — that reductions or trickle-down economics will create jobs — these supporters of the very wealthy continue to spew rhetoric and have co-opted the poorest to agree with them.

Gunter’s one example — that small-business owners lack “comfortable pensions” — is baloney. It was reported last year that half of Canadian couples between age 55 and 64 have no employer pension and that less than 20 per cent of middle income families have saved enough to adequately supplement government pensions. So much for Gunter’s example.
