Ishiguro’s Nobel Prize win goes over big in Nagasaki

Nagasaki mayor Tomihisa Taue says he is proud the Japanese city now has a Nobel Literature Prize winner. Kazuo Ishiguro has kept Nagasaki close to his heart even though he moved to Britain when he was five years old. The Swedish Academy cited Ishiguro, 62, best known for The Remains of the Day, for“novels of great emotional force (that have) uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world.” The prize is worth about $1.4 million.

CELEBRITY Glee star agrees to child porn plea

Former Glee actor Mark Salling has reached a deal with prosecutor­s to plead guilty to possession of child pornograph­y. The plea agreement filed Tuesday in federal court in Los Angeles says the actor is admitting he possessed images of prepubesce­nt children. The agreement states a search warrant found more than 50,000 images of child porn on Salling’s computer and a thumb drive. They have agreed to ask a judge to sentence him to a prison term between four to seven years. He will also be required to register as a sex offender, pay restitutio­n and abide by restrictio­ns on where he can live.

MUSIC Radiohead among Hall of Fame nods

British rockers Radiohead, singer Nina Simone and The Moody Blues are among the first-time nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Nine of 19 acts nominated Thursday are on the ballot for the first time. Between five to seven acts usually make it after a vote of 900 industry experts. Inductees will be announced in December, with the ceremony set for April 14. Rage Against the Machine, Judas Priest, Kate Bush, Dire Straits, Eurythmics and Sister Rosetta Tharpe are also on the ballot for the first time.

Hamilton bids to be Juno’s only home

Hamilton, Ont., is bidding to host the 2019 Juno Awards with an extra request: It wants to become the permanent home of the coveted Canadian music event. The city council general issues committee agreed Wednesday to submit an offer hitched to the belief that Hamilton’s burgeoning arts community offers enough reason for the Junos to stay put.
