Porsche 911 GT2 RS smashes Nürburgring record for a lap
The Porsche 911 GT2 RS is an absolute missile on the track. Everyone expected the 700-horsepower, rear-drive sports car to be fast, but we’re not sure how many people expected it to be this insane.
Lapping the Nürburgring in six minutes and 47 seconds, the GT2 RS is not only the fastest 911 to go around the course, it even beat the Porsche 918 Spyder around the track by 10 seconds. And unlike the Lamborghini Huracán Performante’s lap, which had many questioning its legitimacy, the GT2’s lap occurred with a notary watching and with all cars wearing street-legal Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.
The GT2 RS is pushing the limits of what’s possible with a street car. The only car to have set a lap faster was the barely-a-production-car NIO EP9 electric wundercar. But only six were built, so the GT2 RS is comfortably the fastest “real” car to lap the Ring.
Interestingly, the record-setting car wore an eye-searing combination of yellow and black paint with a red and black interior. Hopefully it’s a one-off.
