LEGGETT LOSS DEVASTATING

- — Ted Wyman

The horrible news many people suspected about Blue Bombers dime back Moe Leggett was confirmed on Sunday: He has a torn Achilles tendon and is out for the season.

Leggett suffered the injury after landing awkwardly while recovering an onside kick attempt by the B.C. Lions late in Saturday’s 26-20 Winnipeg win.

He crumpled to the ground and immediately grabbed at his right leg in the area of the Achilles. He was carried off the field in obvious pain and later left the field on a motorized cart.

Leggett has been arguably the Bombers’ best defensive player this season, with 50 tackles, three interceptions (one for a touchdown) and three sacks. He has also returned a punt for a touchdown.

The injury is awful news for Leggett, and for the Bombers, who have an 11-4 record and have clinched a playoff spot.

Torn Achilles tendon injuries usually come with a minimum six months recovery time and that is just for people to resume routine activities. They can be more devastating to professional athletes.

The Bombers will have a major hole to fill when they take on the Argonauts on Saturday in Toronto.

Brandon Alexander, who is currently starting at field corner for the Bombers, has filled in for Leggett at strong-side linebacker in the past. There will need to be some juggling in the secondary to make that happen, as halfback Brian Walker was also injured on Saturday.

The Bombers have defensive backs Robert Porter and Darnell Walker, Jr., on the practice roster.

Leggett’s injury is the latest blow to a Bombers team that also recently lost star defensive end Jamaal Westerman for the season with a suspected torn triceps muscle.

Receiver Darvin Adams also suffered what looked like a significant injury in Saturday’s game. The Bombers had no update on his injured arm Sunday.

They could get injured veterans Weston Dressler (slotback) and Ian Wild (linebacker) back this week.
