Site C approval difficult, but prudent decision by premier

-

I commend Premier John Horgan for his difficult, but prudent decision to proceed with completion of the Site C dam.

I know that he wrestled with this decision and that the preceding government had done its utmost to ensure that the project was at the point of no return before the last provincial election. That being said, it must be recognized that this project will not only provide for thousands of jobs today, but will also help displace fossil fuel plants, while providing a secure source of green energy for generations of British Columbians to rely on.

The termination of Site C would have represented a $4-billion immediate loss to the B.C. government with no benefit from the expenditure, while alternative, new sources of clean power would have had fewer benefits and would currently be at least as costly as Site C power.

As unpalatable as Site C may be to some, to have reversed course would have been financially disastrous for B.C. Hydro, taxpayers and ultimately the consumers.

Site C is Clark’s boondoggle

Even though I think the Site C project is unnecessary, the fact is the NDP in the end had a “dammed if we do, dammed if we don’t” problem to deal with.

If anyone should be blamed, it’s former premier Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberals for hoisting this boondoggle on taxpayers.

Not much pride in parade

So they’re going to ban uniformed police from the gay Pride Parade? Sounds to me like the LGBT community is being bullied by a hate group. And there’s not much pride in that.

Pride society bullied

If Black Lives Matter has demands of the Pride Parade organizers, that sounds like they bullied the pride society into banning uniformed police officers. Bullying the pride society smells a lot like gay bashing.

How ironic.

Let’s have a vote on pot

Marijuana is a social evil. Legalizing it will encourage naive people to use it. That, in turn, increases the number of potheads and the long list of problems they create.

The government should hold a referendum on marijuana so people of sense can confirm the need for penalties. It isn’t harmless.

Regardless what the government does, don’t be a dope. Don’t use dope.

Singles need tax cuts

As a single senior who has never had children, I question the fairness of using my single-income tax dollars to pay for child care so that a couple who chose to have children can earn double what I earn.

Do they not already receive a taxpayer stipend for every child they choose to have? Why do people who choose to have children feel entitled to more of our tax dollars?

Single people already pay more for rent, utilities, food, etc., than couples. I don’t remember any politician offering any type of help for single people who struggle financially while working full time. I guess there is no political payoff in helping single, childless seniors.
