THE GEEK’S GAME OF THE WEEK

Jacksonville at San Francisco

-

It might have been the best deal made since the Winklevoss twins dumped a couple million from their Facebook legal settlement into bitcoin.

The San Francisco 49ers aren’t virtual billionaires (well, the owners are), but they did strike it rich when they traded a second-round draft pick to the Patriots for Jimmy Garoppolo.

It took a month, three losses and an injury to unknown soldier C.J. Beathard before the 49ers caved in and let Jimmy G suit up. He then went out an promptly won three straight games for the previously 1-11 team, pushing the Niners over 400 yards offence in two straight games for the first time since 2011. He has helped them match their win total from the previous 27 games and last week’s 25-23 win over the Tennessee Titans was the first victory over a team with a winning record in three years.

Jimmy G won his first two starts in New England as well, filling in for Tom Brady last season, mean he’s one of just seven quarterbacks in NFL history to win their first five starts. (And none are named Brady, either).

And of those seven, only one — St. Louis Rams QB Kurt Warner — had a better efficiency rating (131.4 to 103.0), but while Warner had the Greatest Show on Turf, Garappolo has been working with NFL castoffs and undrafted free agents.

It’s notable that the 49ers haven’t even begun to negotiate with Garappolo, despite his obvious impact. They’ll probably lock him up under a franchise tag, but if the cautionary tale out of Washington is any benchmark, they’d be wise to sign him long-term.

It appears the Jimmy G Era is set to dawn on San Francisco. After this weekend, though.

Pick: Jaguars

The Greek says: Jimmy Garoppolo is proving to be the real deal for the 49ers. He’ll have to prove it again against the fiercest pass attack in football. Pick: Jaguars
