Beckham under fire for thin model in ad
Victoria Beckham is facing backlash for casting a thin model in an advertisement for her new eyewear collection.
The former Spice Girls star released the campaign on Jan. 11 featuring 29-year-old Lithuanian model Giedre Dukauskaite turned to the side, sporting oversized reading glasses.
“Back to work!,” Beckham wrote on Instagram. “Start the year with new frames from the Spring Summer 2018 #VBEyewear collection inspired by 1970s retro classics and updated for a feathery-light, fresh and modern look.”
However after the advertisement made its rounds on social media, it was criticized by Beckham’s followers.
“Please be responsible to impressionable aspects of your audience and use models who look healthy,” one user wrote. “It’s the perception that she’s far too skinny for her frame but has nonetheless managed to secure such a prestigious modelling campaign that is the concerning factor here. There will be lots of girls and boys looking at this and sadly seeing skinny = successful.”
The 43-year-old has faced backlash in the past for casting models that were considered too thin — in 2015, she defended herself over the women that walked in her runway show.
“Our casting director spoke to the (modelling) agencies, and we know that all our girls are healthy,” she told The Telegraph. “They’re young, they’re thin, but that doesn’t mean they’re ill.”
