Uber delivers McDonald’s

Delivery app enters crowded Vancouver market

- SCOTT BROWN sbrown@postmedia.com

Uber Eats, the ride-hailing giant’s food platform, joined a crowded field of food delivery apps — Door Dash, Skip The Dishes, Foodora and Just Eat — already serving Vancouver when it launched in December.

But Uber is muscling its way through the pack by charging a nominal delivery fee of 18 cents for the month of January. The delivery price will return to $5.99 when the 18-cent promotion ends.

More importantly, to fast-food lovers anyway, they’ve partnered with McDonald’s on McDelivery, which allows customers to order anything off the Golden Arches’ menu, with the exception of soft serve, and have it delivered.

The Uber Eats app, like most of its competitors, provides you with a smiling photo of your delivery person and allows you to track the path of their car or bike (Uber Eats uses both).

Uber Eats, which operates from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., serves a limited delivery area that includes downtown Vancouver, Gastown, Yaletown, Fairview and Kitsilano. Service cuts off at Blenheim Street in the west, 33rd Avenue in the south, and at Nanaimo Street in the east.

Uber Eats isn’t the only one delivering Mickey D’s in this market.

Door Dash, which has been operating in Vancouver for more than two years, boasts a heavier fastfood selection than Uber Eats, partnering not only with McDonald’s but Tim Hortons, Subway, Quiznos and Taco del Mar. Meanwhile, Uber Eats’ rather thin fast-food selection also includes Harvey’s and Vera’s Burger Shack. Fast-food delivery costs $6.99 with Door Dash.

Skip The Dishes may not have McDonald’s but it does have the deepest fast-food roster of any the local apps. Headlined by KFC, Skip The Dishes also delivers Fat Burger, Triple O’s, A&W, Harvey’s, Five Guys, Carl’s Jr., and Vera’s. Skip The Dishes pricing is based on drive time but delivery fees to downtown Vancouver (Granville and Dunsmuir) range from $2.95 to $4.95.

Just Eat’s fast-food line up includes Burger King, Harvey’s and Vera’s. The delivery fee for all three is $3 based on a minimum order of $25 for Vera’s and $15 for both Burger King and Harvey’s.

Foodora, which only employs fit bike couriers, lists the salad and wrap chain Freshii and Vera’s. Both carry a delivery fee of $4.50.
