Lions lock up QB Lulay for 2018 season

- LIONEL WILD

Travis Lulay will be back on the sidelines with the B.C. Lions this coming season.

The Canadian Football League club announced Monday that the 34-year-old quarterback, the CFL’s most outstanding player in 2011, signed a one-year contract to return to the den.

Lulay was eligible to become a free agent on Tuesday, the opening day of CFL free agency. The market officially opens at 9 a.m. Pacific.

“Travis is a very important part of our team,” Lions head coach Wally Buono said in a statement. “We saw last season that, when called upon, he can still be an elite quarterback in our league. He is a tremendous leader and we are extremely pleased to have him back in 2018.”

While largely a backup to starter Jonathon Jennings the past two seasons, Lulay got plenty of playing time due to Jennings’ injuries and inconsistent play.

Lulay, in nine CFL seasons, has appeared in 128 career games for the Leos, throwing for 18,858 yards (third all-time in team history) with 114 touchdowns. In 11 appearances last season he completed 121 of 165 pass attempts for 1,693 yards and 10 majors.

The 2011 season was the career highlight for Lulay, as he also was named Grey Cup MVP in the Lions’ 34-23 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at B.C. Place Stadium.

Lulay joined the Leos in 2009, four years after turning pro out of Montana State. He spent the first three seasons of his professional career in the NFL and NFL Europe, bouncing between the Seattle Seahawks, New Orleans Saints and Berlin Thunder.
