UBC stars of the week

-

Conor Morgan, guard/forward, men’s basketball

He’s the workhorse the T-birds hitched their wagon to, and is looking to pull his team to a national title. The fifth-year player leads the conference in minutes (34.3), while sitting third in points (23.9) and second in rebounds (9.7). He was a big part of UBC’s season-ending surge, which saw them end on a sixgame win streak, having won 15 of their last 16. UBC earned a bye to the Canada West quarter-finals, where they’ll host the Manitoba Bisons in a best-of-three series starting this Thursday at 4 p.m. Game 2 is Friday at 4 p.m., with Game 3, if necessary, going Saturday at 3 p.m. All games are at War Memorial Gym.

Tory Micklash, goaltender, women’s hockey

While scoring has been hard to come by at times for UBC, keeping the puck out of the net has made up for it, thanks to Canada West’s best one-two tandem between the pipes in Micklash and Amelia Boughn. The second-year Micklash made 20 stops Friday in Edmonton for her 12th win, finishing the season with 15 wins, a .938 save percentage and three shutouts. UBC finished third in Canada West with a 14-5-5-4 record, and will host the Mount Royal Cougars in a quarter-final series. The Thunderbirds kick off their drive for a third straight conference title Friday at 3 p.m., with Game 2 slated for Saturday at 3 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, is at 1 p.m. on Sunday. All games are at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
