Clan needs help to claim final playoff spot in GNAC women’s basketball loop

- — Steve Ewen

With a single game left in their regular season, the SFU Clan is one of four teams in the hunt for the final playoff spot in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball loop.

Simon Fraser University (8-11) plays host to the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets (11-7) Thursday atop Burnaby Mountain (7 p.m.) and then coach Bruce Langford’s Clan will have to sit and wait for the outcome from Montana State’s visit Saturday to the Western Washington Vikings (8-11) to see who lands the sixth and last GNAC post-season spot.

Also still in the mix are the Concordia Cavaliers (7-11) and the Western Oregon Wolves (7-11), who are at the Saint Martin’s Saints (3-15) and Seattle Pacific Falcons (13-5) respectively Thursday. Concordia then travels to Seattle Pacific and Western Oregon goes to Saint Martin’s Saturday to wrap-up league play.

SFU beat Western Washington 79-77 Tuesday at home to keep their playoff hopes alive. Junior centre Tayla Jackson led four SFU players in double figures in scoring with 19 points. She was 8-for-9 from the field. She also had five rebounds and two blocks.

The top six teams at the end of the regular season move on to the GNAC tournament, which runs March 1-3 at the University of Alaska Anchorage. The winner of that gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Division 2 national championships.
