Baun name back in blue and white

Sunday’s deal for Montreal Canadiens centre Tomas Plekanec also involved trading a son of a former Leaf for the grandson of a four time Toronto Cup winner.

Welcome home, Kyle Baun, a descendant of Bobby (Boomer) Baun, scorer of the famous cracked ankle overtime goal that helped the Maple Leafs win the 1964 Stanley Cup.

Bobby, who played defence for a passionate 17 years in the NHL, had five children and more than 10 grandchildren, with Kyle getting the furthest in hockey.

“It was definitely very cool when I was younger having him as a grandfather,” Kyle told the

Hamilton Spectator in an earlier interview.

“We went on fishing trips together. For sure he got me into hockey.”

A 6-foot-2 winger, GTHL grad and Tier II winger in Scarborough and Cornwall, Kyle played three years at Colgate University and signed as a free agent with the Chicago Blackhawks. He has played only five NHL games to date, having just moved from Chicago’s farm team to Montreal’s affiliate in Laval.

He should get an immediate chance to step in with the Marlies, after they dealt winger Kerby Rychel in the Plekanec trade. The son of Warren, who played here in the 1995 lockout year, caught the Habs attention with 11 points in this season’s series between the two AHL clubs.
