Soft Snow and Sunshine

Spring Skiing at Whistler Blackcomb

- STEVE FISHER

Spring is in the air, and for visitors to Whistler that means sunny skies, soft snow, and plenty of après-ski activities to round out the day. Offering one of the longest ski seasons in North America, Whistler mountain doesn’t close until April 22, and Blackcomb’s slopes will stay open until May 21. As the days grow longer, Whistler Blackcomb’s lifts run longer too, closing at 4:00 p.m. near the season’s end.

For those who haven’t had the chance, skiing or snowboarding in warm temperatures is a very unique experience. Many people are likely boggled by photos of skiers or boarders riding without winter jackets or toques, but it’s surprising how high alpine temperatures can get in the springtime.

“Last year I was skiing Crystal Ridge with my family and we were in our T-shirts, we had no gloves on, just our helmets, and the temperature was around thirteen to fourteen degrees, so it can get quite warm during the spring,” says Whistler Blackcomb’s Senior Communications Manager Marc Riddell.

Since not every spring day is sunny, and weather can change quickly in the mountains, Riddell says it’s still ideal to come equipped with several layers of clothing. When the sun is shining, wearing sunscreen is a must: sunlight reflects off the snow strongly and can quickly cause sunburns (particularly the hilarious goggle tan)!

For many riders, slashing through soft, mushy “corn snow” is the best part of spring. Corn snow provides great conditions for learning to ride, carving groomers or playing in the terrain parks. If you’ve never felt this wet, loose snow under your feet, it’s a springtime treat that Riddell likens to another of his hobbies.

“I surf in the off-season and it almost has the same sensation and sound as when you’re doing a turn on a wave,” explains Riddell.

Another upside of spring skiing is that once you’re done on the hill, your day is far from over. During April, Whistler’s golf courses and beaches open up, and the snow begins to recede from biking and hiking trails. If you’re tired out from the slopes, the longer spring days provide plenty of time to enjoy après-ski drinks and snacks on one of Whistler village’s sunny patios.
