Just try to contain your excitement, OK? A new shipping container fast-food restaurant is coming to Granville Island.

Popina Canteen, described as a “gourmet counter-service restaurant” located inside repurposed shipping containers will open this summer in the northwest corner of Granville Island.

The restaurant is a collaboration among four of Vancouver’s top chefs: Angus An (Maenam, Fat Mao Noodles, Sen Pad Thai, Longtail Kitchen and Freebird Chicken Shack), Robert Belcham (Campagnolo, Monarch Burger), Hamid Salimian (culinary coach and Team Canada captain for the World Culinary Olympics) and Joel Watanabe (Kissa Tanto, Bao Bei).

The restaurant will make use of three shipping containers to house the kitchen and service areas, while an outdoor waterfront seating area will put diners next to some of the best views along False Creek.

The offerings will include high-quality dishes inspired by street-food and old classics, and a liquor licence means diners can knock back a beer while taking in the waterfront view.

The new restaurant comes as part of the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s plans to expand the Public Market into a Market District on Granville Island. The restaurant will be located on part of the parking lot located to the west of the current Public Market.

More details about the menu and an opening date will be released later this spring.
