Carroll Shelby’s personal car collection to be auctioned off

- NICHOLAS MARONESE DRIVING.CA

Two dozen vehicles from Carroll Shelby’s personal car collection, including the very first Shelby Series 1 and Carroll’s own CSX 8000-series Cobra, will be auctioned off without reserve by his estate on June 3.

The 24 lots include a 1969 Shelby Mustang GT 500 that Carroll acquired from actor Jackie Cooper Jr., the first 1999 Shelby 1 Series ever made, and a 2011 Cobra that was Carroll’s personal example from his CSX 8000-series line of modern Cobras.

Also of note is a 1935 Chrysler Airflow Sedan apparently purchased by Carroll from Steve McQueen, and the 1982 Dodge Shelby Charger Prototype, which marks the start of Shelby’s collaborations with Chrysler.

While other cars from Shelby’s collection have been auctioned off individually before, this event represents one of the largest sales of the late Texas-born performance enthusiast’s personal vehicles. Significantly, all of the cars will be offered at no reserve, meaning there will be no minimum bids required.

British auction firm Bonhams, one of the world’s oldest auction houses, will host the sale in Greenwich, Connecticut, in conjunction with the renowned Greenwich Concours d’Elegance.

In January this year, Bonhams sold off one of Carroll’s personal 1966 Shelby GT350H Mustangs for $325,174, and Carroll’s personal 2006 Ford GT for $629,141.
