Police have increased patrols in the area of a Commercial Drive pub following reports that a group of youths has been terrorizing patrons.

Over the weekend, Vancouver police received two calls from staff at Toby’s Bar and Grill, near Commercial Drive and 12th Avenue, about teens harassing customers.

The first call was made just after 9 p.m. on Thursday, while the second call came just after 11:30 p.m. on Friday.

“On both occasions, patrol officers were unable to locate the youths, who had fled prior to the officer’s arrival,” said Sgt. Jason Robillard in a statement. “Officers continue to increase their patrols in the area and are currently working with the pub’s manager.”

Robillard said officers are still working to determine if any crime had been committed. In the meantime, there will be an increase of patrol officers near the pub and surrounding area during busy evening hours.

Nick Pogor of the Commercial Drive Business Society called the police department’s move “a super positive thing.”

“The area around Toby’s is challenging,” he said. “I don’t think people are aware how many people travel through that transit hub. What Toby’s has been dealing with speaks to the issues that area deals with.”

“These issues happen in every neighbourhood . ... We’ve been asking for more involvement from the VPD and Vancouver Coastal Health.”

On Saturday afternoon, a message about a group of 20 to 30 teens who were allegedly “ganging up and harassing” patrons was posted by management to the Toby’s Pub & Grill Facebook page.

“Thursday evening we received multiple complaints of harassment outside the establishment by groups of kids,” the message read. "This was reported to bar staff as well as security.

“They had already been taunting our guards — after severe complaints they were very firmly spoken with and warned police would be informed.”

The post said the group was often spotted splitting into smaller groups of four to six and had a habit of loitering in surrounding alleys and side streets. The author of the post said they had reason to believe the individuals were armed or wielded items that could be used as weapons.

“To local businesses, especially small shops: have multiple staff on shift at all times if possible,” the message continues. “Have your security on high patrol. To people walking home alone, or even with a partner at night: be very aware of your surroundings at all times, and look out for each other.”

No arrests have been made, although police are working to address the safety concerns.

Robillard asked any other businesses or members of the public who believe they may have been victimized to come forward to police.

“The safety of the public remains a priority for the Vancouver Police Department, who are also reminding anyone who feels unsafe or who has been the victim of a crime to call 911 immediately,” said Robillard.
