Honda engineers built this Civic Type R pickup — but it’s just for fun

- NICHOLAS MARONESE Driving.ca

Most pre-production vehicles are destined for the scrapyard, but the special projects team in the product engineering department of Honda’s Swindon, England, factory decided to save one and build, well, this, a Civic Type R with a truck bed, just because.

“Project P” did have one real purpose, apparently: to show itself off at the U.K.’s annual Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Test Day, reports Road & Track.

And show off it will. It’s hard not to pay attention to the Rallye Red pickup, which, despite its diamond-plate bed and new roll bars, managed to keep its slick-and-now-movable rear wing.

Like a Type R, the truck should be able to do the zeroto-100 kilometre-per-hour run in less than six seconds, and nab a top speed of about 265 km/h. Those numbers have got Honda thinking of flicking on the +R mode and setting a Nürburgring lap record for frontwheel-drive pickups.

If all of this sounds like one enticing vehicle to you, we regret to inform you it will stay just that : one enticing vehicle. There are no plans to bring this anywhere close to production, though it could show up on this side of the pond at a car show or something someday.

In the meantime, the engineers joke they’ll just be using it to lug around some of their Honda lawn mowers when necessary. Perks of the job, right?
