Lottery home showcases luxurious openness
Designer envisioned indoor/outdoor lifestyle
This season’s Hometown Heroes Lottery Modern Masterpiece home, a fully-appointed luxury residence in South Surrey, is a lifestyle dream of light, space and colour on a lushly treed corner lot five minutes away from walking trails and Crescent Beach.
Builder Harvey Deol, of Sareen Development, together with David Lin, of David Lin Design Studio, envisioned an indoors/outdoors lifestyle with an abundance of natural light pouring into a modern, minimalist design. The open plan maximizes the actual 3,800 square feet of space into something that feels closer to 5,000, making smaller areas appear larger and establishing a harmonious flow to accommodate the varied needs of a contemporary lifestyle.
The house has four upstairs bedrooms, five baths and all the bells and whistles, including radiant in-floor heating, high-velocity air conditioning, Control4 smartphone access to lighting, TV, music, security and heating, and a detached garage insulated and pre-wired for a theatre room.
While all the features are impressive, the luxurious openness is the most outstanding quality of this home. There’s no traditional foyer area inside the fabulous nine-foot door, an elegant dark blue inside and out. “You appreciate the openness of the house right away, with the light, the height and the great things to look at. We went with a clean, sleek look to emphasize the open feeling — no crown mouldings, no drops,” Deol says.
Interior designer Debbie Heal, of Sunrae Designs, used rich colours and textures to create warmth within the openness. “Because of that openness, everything had to relate,” she says. “At La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries, where I sourced all the furniture in this house, the contemporary floral paintings that are now in the great room caught my eye right away, so they were my cue. They inspired me to develop a palette of warm greys with chartreuse, teal and a dash of fuchsia.
“I simplified the palette to give the living room a more formal look and added texture with a chartreuse velvet sofa, white leather chairs and chartreuse patterned drapes. Black accents unify and ground the colours throughout.”
This home feels like a labour of love, with its fresh, innovative use of colour and thoughtful details like the elegant front door, outdoor terrace spaces and wealth of well-placed windows. A long, open staircase inside the entryway, with “floating” steps and recessed LED handrail lighting, sets the tone with artful simplicity.
