Cat fight gets man 50 years

Set wife on fire over kitty litter

-

A Michigan man who argued with his wife over kitty litter thought the best way to end the dispute was to set her on fire.

On Tuesday, 55-year-old David John Garnett was sentenced to up to 50 years in prison after pleading no contest to first-degree arson and assault with intent to murder after drenching his 57-yearold wife with gasoline and setting her on fire on Feb. 5 at the Holly Village Mobile Home Park in Holly, Mich.

According to Click On Detroit, Garnett told cops he set his wife ablaze after a dispute over money and who would end up cleaning their cat’s litter box.

“I’m so sick of her not taking care of the cat that we have,” the man reportedly told cops. “She’ll leave it and go to work because all she thinks about is going to work.”

Garnett told cops he went out to the shed to get a can of gasoline after the argument. He squirted the flammable liquid in the hallway of his home and on his wife of 12 years, but only enough to “scare” her.

After being lit on fire, Garnett’s unnamed wife jumped out a back window, according to the Tri-County Times.

“She rolled around in the snow — she did the stop, drop and roll — went to her neighbour’s house and eventally called 911,” said Oakland County Sheriff ’s Office detective Scott Pasini.

The woman sustained burns to her legs along with lacerations to her hands.

Garnett’s wife is recovering from her injuries, Holly Police chief Michael Story said.
