Does increased suicide rate mean life’s meaning is waning?

The recent high-profile suicides of fashion designer Kate Spade and CNN food and travel show host Anthony Bourdain not only highlight the depth of despair that many people are going through, despite the optics of living seemingly cherished lives, but also the need for society to engage in dialogue around ultimate issues of meaning and purpose in life.

Perhaps we need to recalibrat­e what a peaceful and contented life looks like, how it is obtained and what role, if any, the eternal plays in this dynamic.

There is no doubt that mental illness plays a huge role in feelings of helplessne­ss and hopelessne­ss, irrespecti­ve of a person’s station in life, but it is incumbent that we probe deeper to mine any hunger pains of the soul and what can satiate that hunger. Don Sukkau, Delta
