Trump’s verbal attack on Canada an absolute embarrassment

-

The boorish behaviour, bullying and ignorance of U.S. President Donald Trump is appalling not only to Canadians, but to many Americans. I never thought I would be embarrassed to be an American, but since the rise of Trump that is the case.

Political engagement among liberals here has skyrocketed as we do our bit to save our democracy and preserve our alliances.

My profound apologies to Canadians for Trump’s recent comments related to U.S.-Canada trade. Jennifer Rihn, Mountain View, Calif.

Trudeau deserves better

Having been married to an American woman for over 50 years, I cannot say how disappointed I am with the comments of U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Canada, a supposed ally, as well as the disparaging comments he made regarding our prime minister.

While I don’t agree with many of the things Justin Trudeau is doing, he does not deserve to be called names and berated by Trump. Tom Duncan, Chilliwack

Choose wisely, Horgan

After U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent tirade against Canada, I’m just wondering if Premier John Horgan still wants to take advice from his friends in Washington State on pipelines and the environment.

B.C. should choose its friends wisely. It could be time to pick which side of the border you are standing on. Dan Petryk, Calgary

Biker firefighters OK

Our firefighters have one of the most dangerous, stressful and traumatic jobs out there. They will run into a burning house, pry you from a wrecked car, or rescue you from a swollen river. They don’t care whether you are rich or poor, what ethnicity you are, or if you are a “good guy or “bad guy.”

If a handful of our heroes want to join the Florian’s Knights and chum around with other bikers or Hells Angels on their own time, then I say, go ahead! Fej Ayley, North Vancouver

Abortion a bigger issue

The Sunday Province dedicated its entire Page 3 to the Red Umbrella March, celebrating the history of Vancouver sex workers, with more photos online.

That’s quite the coverage for “approximately 100 people” celebrating prostitution, an industry that exploits women and thrives on the human trafficking of young people.

Meanwhile, thousands of Canadians who march in support of human life are ignored by The Province. I realize “choice” is the supreme value today, but the fact Canada is the only country without an abortion law and that many Canadians are trying to draw attention to it is a much more significant story. Paul Schratz, director of strategic communications, Archdiocese of Vancouver

AA saved us

I recently attended a reunion of about 30 men in an Alcoholics Anonymous men’s group. Everyone was asked for their name and years of sobriety. At the end of the meeting, the organizer announced that collectively we had accumulated 991 years of sobriety — only nine years short of a millennium.

I was emotionally struck by this, realizing that because of AA the world had been blessed by all those years of men loving and helping one another and contributing to the good of the planet. Had it not been for AA, our stories would have ended in sadness, despair and, ultimately death many years ago. F. Ron Yorston, Delta
