CELEBRATE DAD’S DAY AT ANY NUMBER OF VANCOUVER CAR SHOWS SUNDAY

- CAM HUTCHINS

This is the big weekend for all the dads out there and the second Father’s Day since our family lost our patriarch. I am lucky to have huge memories spent with my dad at car shows and car museums. I used to love taking him to the Italian/French show in North Van on Father’s Day, especially when there was an Oldsmobile club show just across the railroad tracks from it.

As usual there are plenty of car events this weekend and I will be at the KMS Tools Father’s Day show tomorrow at their Coquitlam location. My plans for Sunday are not firmed up yet but in the past I have often been in Mission really early to shoot the cars as they enter the show and then head up to the Italian/French Show in North Van. I guess my wife’s Fiat 500 Turbo will allow us to park on the grass as entrants!

Last weekend we stayed home Saturday and did yard work, but on Sunday we went to three shows, starting with the Pontiac club show in Langley where I saw the first of two Black Trans Am I would see that day. Always a big fan of the audacious Black and Gold car made famous in Smokey and the Bandit. Over at the B.C. Chevelle club show I saw a 1950 Chevy Deluxe Coupe owned by John Dirksen that had spent the winter being used in a TV show filmed locally. Brian Atlee has owned his 1965 Belair Wagon with my favourite GM colour and now it has air ride suspension. I have been watching him make changes to this wagon for years and it reminds me of a virtually identical wagon (to my memory at least) owned by John Zanatta from my high school days.

As faithful readers of this column know I am big on the idea of bringing kids to car shows, and the Odolinski family’s 1971 Chevrolet Custom pickup is always transporting dad and his two sons to multiple car shows every. It was a pleasure to see the truck on display with the boys taking in all the cars.

At the Sockeye Run show in Steveston I saw lots of cars I am familiar with and lots more cars I had not seen before. There was a Maverick with a Mustang shaker hood beside a red and white 1959 Ford Ranchero. Further on there was a very cool custom Panera in bright yellow and a 1975 Chevy Vega owed by Randy Alexander.

The afternoon ended up with fish and chips in the park where we sat and watched the rain clouds way in the western ski march along towards us. Looks like the weather will be good for this weekend, but regardless, have a happy Father’s Day and take a kid to a car show. Just like my dad did for many years.
