SNAPSHOT OF THE DAY

-

KURTIS LARSON Serbia 1, Costa Rica 1

The Ticos’ best chance to get a result in Group E. With unwinnable games against Brazil and Switzerland looming large, look for Costa Rica to survive this first test.

Germany 2, Mexico 2

Die Mannschaft drubbed El Tri 4-1 at the Confederations Cup, where the Mexicans got a close look at what they’re up against. This one could be as wide-open as Portugal-Spain.

Brazil 3, Switzerland 1

This will be more complicated for the Brazilians than most want to believe. Look for them to tack on a late goal to make the scoreline appear a bit more dominant. The Swiss can keep things close.

DAN BILICKI Serbia 1, Costa Rica 0

We’re not expecting another Cinderella run from Los Ticos this time around. While a draw isn’t out of the question, Serbia should sneak out with three points.

Germany 2, Mexico 1

The defending champs have perhaps their toughest test up first and, while El Tri has never beaten the Germans, it’ll put up a fight. Will it be enough, though?

Brazil 3, Switzerland 0

The Swiss will press the Brazilians and put a lot of pressure on their back line, but the Selecao have the talent to beat it and should be able to poke holes in their defence.

PAUL CHAPMAN Serbia 1, Costa Rica 0

As surprising and resilient as Costa Rica can be, the experience of Serbia in the form of Ivanovic, Matic and Tadic will run the show. There may be a few cards in this one.

Germany 2, Mexico 0

Germany have looked flat and uninspired in the lead in to this World Cup, but now the lights are on, expect them to be too organized for Mexico, who will struggle for goals against this defence.

Brazil 3 Switzerland 0

Gabriel Jesus, Willian, Coutinho and Neymar, with Firmino off the bench, I don’t see how an average defence can cope with that kind of firepower.

DEREK VAN DIEST Serbia 2, Costa Rica 0

Was in Brazil four years ago to watch Costa Rica defeat Italy in the group stage and they shouldn’t be underestimated again. Fortunately for Serbia, they’re not in a position to underestimate anybody.

Germany 4, Mexico 0

The last time Mexico played a meaningful tournament game, they were hammered 7-0 by Chile, who did not qualify for Russia. Mexico may be the best CONCAF have to offer, but that’s nowhere near the defending World Cup champions.

Brazil 3, Switzerland 0

This is Neymar’s tournament to cement Brazilian legendary status the likes of Pele, Garrincha, Rivelino, Zico, Romario, Ronaldo, Ronalhinho and Rivaldo.
