As warmer weather brings out more motorcyclists, police are reminding riders and drivers to be mindful of speed limits after a collision Saturday sent two people to hospital.

Just before 5 p.m. on Saturday, a motorcyclist travelling southbound collided with a Mini Cooper in the intersection of Griffiths Drive and 18th Avenue.

The 28-year-old motorcyclist was “thrown” from the bike and remains in hospital in serious condition. On Saturday evening, police said the rider’s injuries were “possibly life-threatening.”

The driver of the car was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“While the cause of the collision is still under investigation, speed may have been a contributing factor,” said Burnaby RCMP in a statement. “Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the collision.”

Those who prefer two motorized wheels over four are reminded to obey posted speed limits and to “always be prepared for the unexpected.”

“Motorcycle crashes in B.C. peak in the summer as warmer weather and conditions bring more riders onto the road. Before you take to the road please take time to review the advice and tips from ICBC located on their website,” said police.

Anyone who witnessed the accident Saturday evening, or who may have dashboard-camera footage of the collision, is asked to contact investigators at 604-6469999.
