CARLY RAE JEPSEN WITH THE VSO

- — Shawn Conner

When: June 25 Where: Orpheum Theatre Tickets: starting at $55 at vancouversymphony.ca

1 MORE THAN ONE HIT

While VSO subscribers may vaguely recall her millionselling summertime smash Call Me Maybe, Carly Rae Jepsen went on to win over critics with her 2015 Polaris Prize–shortlisted album E•MO•TION.

2 MISSION HAS TALENT

The Mission born-and-raised 32-year-old spent her early days of struggle in Vancouver before landing a spot on the fifth season of Canadian Idol in 2007 (she came in third). She released her folk-influenced debut Tug of War in 2008 but it wasn’t until the release of Call Me Maybe in 2012, and the subsequent album Kiss, that her career took off.

3 ALL THE HITS

The concert will include some of the singer’s most popular songs, including many from 2015’s E•MO•TION and its little sister, 2016’s E•MO•TION Side B.

3 E•MO•TION X 2

“With an orchestra, I think the emotions could fly even higher,” Jepsen told the Globe and Mail. “It’s getting to a less pop-and-polished place, a more raw and serious one — more authentic to what those lyrics are saying.”

4 CHRIS MAYO

To re-imagine her music backed by full symphony, Jepsen called on Toronto composer Chris Mayo. The VSO show, featuring conductor Lucas Waldin, marks her third performance with a symphony, following collaborations with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

5 KATY PERRY

Jepsen opened for Katy Perry during a month of the latter’s Witness tour, including two nights at Rogers Arena. The Orpheum show promises to be more intimate, and more satisfying to those of us who like our Carly Rae straight up.
