Patrons and workers in downtown Vancouver’s entertainment district who are on the Granville strip into the early hours of the morning may be able to access their bus ride home easier than before with the launch of a new pilot program.

TransLink announced Monday that all 10 NightBuses that run through downtown will stop at a welllit hub on the corner of West Georgia and Granville streets, starting immediately.

The already existing routes will depart from that station every 20-30 minutes, with some services following routes close to SkyTrain stops. Night service at the station will begin at 2 a.m., and the last departure will be sometime between 3-5 a.m., depending on the bus.

“Making sure that people have a safe way home at the end of the night is a key part of building a vibrant city,” Mayor Gregor Robertson said.

“I’m pleased to see TransLink working to provide new transportation solutions for Vancouver residents and visitors who want a convenient and safe way to get home after enjoying (a night out in) our lively entertainment district.”

The pilot program will run until the beginning of September, when TransLink will then assess it for further recommendation.

Christa Montpetit, director of the Hospitality Vancouver Association, which represents businesses in the Granville and Davie Village districts, said the change will help workers get home safely, as well.

“Having reliable and affordable transportation options for our workers and patrons to get out of the downtown core after the bars close is vital for our businesses,” she said.
