Kurtis Larson breaks down our first pair of matchups for the Round of 16

URUGUAY VS. PORTUGAL

JUNE 30 — SOCHI

A mouthwatering Round of 16 matchup featuring two of the most devisive players in the world: Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez. It’s hard to grade the South Americans after watching them walk through what was perhaps the easiest World Cup group since the tournament expanded to 32 teams. That said, Edinson Cavani and Suarez are competing at a high level. Giving Portugal hope isn’t just Ronaldo, it’s the play of its two centre backs — Jose Fonte and Pepe — behind defensive midfielder William Carvalho, who has been immense for Portugal in each of the previous two major tournaments. This is going to be a one-goal game. Early indicators tip the scales in Uruguay’s favour. That said, we’ve bet against this Portuguese side before.

SPAIN VS. RUSSIA

JULY 1 — MOSCOW

Russian egos took a big hit following a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Uruguay. Truth be told, the hosts benefitted from feasting on two decidedly average sides in Saudi Arabia and Egypt en route to securing passage. While La Furia Roja faces all kinds of questions in defence, it’s unlikely Russian playmakers Aleksandr Golovin and Denis Cheryshev are going trouble Spain enough times to match their opponent’s level of scoring. The task here isn’t impossible for Russia — especially when you consider this match will be played at the county’s national stadium. But Spain should get through what might be its simplest test so far.
