Tune would change had court been ruling on Muslim law

-

Would Gwendolyn Landolt of REAL Women of Canada respond the same way if the Supreme Court of Canada had handed down the same judgment if a Muslim or Jewish university wanted their own law school but had strict religious covenants grounded in Shariah and Talmudic doctrine for students?

I would guess, no. She would be first in line to upbraid the court for allowing religious covenants if they were not based on Christianity. My view is that all law schools must be secular. The laws of our country are secular. Leave religion in your home and church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or whatever. Ron Moodley, Surrey

We still need oil

We must face the fact that the world is not ready to go cold turkey with fossil fuels, even as we introduce alternative sources of energy. If oil isn’t transported by pipelines, it will travel by trucks and trains, increasing the risk of spills. Also, the anti-pipeline protesters are not all riding bicycles and horses to their protest — most must be driving motor vehicles or riding buses, both of which require fossil fuels. Reporters should house kids

It’s time for the thousands of big-mouth journalists in North America to put their money where their mouths are by hosting immigrant children in their homes. That way the children will be looked after and not caged like the media suggests, pending outcome of trials of the kids’ parents. That should only take a year or so.

The media suggests that America has no right to protect its borders. Neither does Canada, apparently. Bill Davis, New Westminster

Farmland must be saved

I am happy 200 hectares of agricultural land in Abbotsford was not removed from the Agricultural Land Reserve for industrial purposes. We must protect our farmland.

With the undeniable changes in our weather patterns, increase in population, fires and droughts in California where much of our produce is grown, it will be more and more important for us to have our own food sources. On those lands that are considered “marginal” for growing crops, greenhouses could be built, instead of being built on some of the more productive soil.

Once our agricultural land is used for any other purpose, it will never be returned for use for food production. It must be protected. Valerie Caskey, Langley

Ottawa must be in charge

I am sorry, but the Horgan government was wrong to give First Nations control of Canadian territorial waters. It is a recipe for disaster. The only government that should be doing that is the federal government, elected by the people of Canada. How are companies wishing to invest in Canada going to do that when they are going to have to negotiate with groups that do not represent most Canadians? Daniel Wright, Abbotsford

Pot leaf shows disrespect

I keep noticing people waving a version of our flag that replaces the maple leaf with a marijuana leaf.

I am sure this is not what our servicemen and women had in mind when they were fighting for our freedoms, which we all enjoy and to often take for granted.

Show a little respect for our country and also for the military veterans who fought for us. Brian Barnes, Steveston
