CARNUT CORNER

GO BACK IN TIME AT AN ANTIQUE TRUCK SHOW THIS WEEKEND

- CAM HUTCHINS

Last Saturday was a bit of a rainout at the track, meaning no racing, but I did get to meet lots of racers who were hanging out waiting for the weather to clear.

As readers know I’m big on bringing kids to car shows, and taking this one step further was Rob Munro and his son Rob who race, respectively, a 1940 Ford pickup and a 1969 Acadian that Rob junior rebuilt into a 1969 Nova. Both cars are fully street legal.

Another crazy roadworthy car was Jason Field’s 1971 Nova Yenko Clone. This car started out in 2010 running 12 seconds in the quarter mile, but now runs in the 275 Doorslammer class with the smaller rear 275 wheels and goes 171 miles per hour with a time of 7.93 seconds. Oh yeah, the parachute bracket can be unbolted and with the stock flip down licence plate bracket upright it turns into a radical grocery getter.

On Sunday I went to the Jellybean Autocrafters’ Canada D’eh car Show at the old Langley Speedway and shot pics of the cars as they entered the show. It was a great turnout and the weather was more or less very good.

This weekend features two truck shows, one in Cloverdale and one in Duncan, the former being at the B.C. Vintage Truck Museum, a great place to spend the day. The museum has been created by a dedicated group of volunteers and it is pretty amazing.

On Sunday I’m going full road-warrior mode with a plan to and try to get to four shows. First stop is the Mopar show in Langley where there is always a colourful variety of muscle. Then it’s down to White Rock for the Totem T-bird show, which celebrates the Ford Thunderbird and Ford’s amazing variety of colours that they had during the Fifties. From White Rock it’s over to Coquitlam for the show at Woody’s Pub then over the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge for the North Van Corvette show.

Grab a kid and go to as many shows as you can this weekend.
