Sagan takes advantage of mistake
Peter Sagan had the yellow jersey holder to thank for his victory in Stage 5 of the Tour de France Wednesday. Greg Van Avermaet mistimed his sprint, and Sagan, the threetime reigning world champion, took advantage to claim his second victory in this year’s event. Van Avermaet still increased his overall lead over Tejay van Garderen to two seconds. Chris Froome, the four-time champion who trails Van Avermaet by 57 seconds in 15th spot, finished in the main pack with the other favourites. The Tour remains in Brittany for Stage 6 on Thursday, another hilly leg of 181 kilometres.
Hoopsters sue NCAA
A lawyer representing a group of former Louisville men’s basketball players says they have filed a lawsuit against the NCAA over the organization’s vacation of the Cardinals’ 2013 national championship and 2012 Final Four. John Morgan, one of several attorneys representing former Cardinals captain Luke Hancock, the 2013 Final Four Most Outstanding Player, and four teammates from that title team, described the NCAA as “a morally bankrupt organization” that exploits student-athletes. The NCAA stripped Louisville of the title as part of sanctions for violations discovered during an escort scandal investigation.
Skier battles cancer
Olympic gold medallist Kikkan Randall announced Wednesday that she’s been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer.
The 35-year-old cross-country skier known for pink-highlighted hair said on social media that “the colour pink has taken on a new chapter” in her life.
She says the prognosis is good, but she expects life to change significantly in the months ahead. Randall said she had her first round of chemo Monday in Anchorage, Alaska, her hometown before she moved earlier this year to Penticton with her 2-year-son, Breck, and husband Jeff Ellis.
Segura an All-Star
Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Jesus Aguilar and Seattle Mariners shortstop Jean Segura have won the final two roster spots for next week’s All-Star Game in Washington.
Major League Baseball released the results of online balloting for the last slot in each league Wednesday night, with Aguilar drawing 20.2 million votes to secure his first All-Star selection.
Segura snagged the last American League spot with 13.6 million votes.
‘Pacman’ attacked
Police say former Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones was attacked during a run-in with a facility-service employee at the airport in Atlanta.
Atlanta Police spokesman Jarius Daugherty says Jones confronted ABM Industries employee Frank Ragin after Ragin made a “gesture” toward the football player Tuesday night at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Police say words were exchanged before Ragin struck Jones with a closed fist, causing a cut to Jones’ face. Ragin also hit a woman who was with Jones, injuring her hand.
He says Ragin was the aggressor, and Jones defended himself.
Ragin was arrested on two counts of battery and taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for injuries.
