Mercedes-Benz unveils A-Class sedan

- NICK TRAGIANIS Driving.ca

Hot on the heels of the 2019 A-Class hatchback, MercedesBenz has announced a sedan version will join the lineup.

Set to debut at the Paris Motor Show in October, the A-Class sedan joins Mercedes’ ever-growing compact-car lineup. Save for the fact that it traded its hatch for a trunk, the A-Class sedan is mostly identical to its more practical sibling. The family resemblance is strong, and from some angles, it comes across as a baby C-Class.

But that bodywork serves a purpose. Fine-tuned bits such as sealed headlight surrounds, panelling covering almost the entire underbody and engine bay, and unique font and rear spoilers, among many other tweaks, all help the car better slice through the air and offer stellar fuel economy, says Mercedes.

The A sedan will come to North America as the A 220 with a 2.0-litre turbo-four under the hood, but at 188 horsepower and 221 poundfeet of torque, it’ll be slightly detuned compared to the hatch. A seven-speed dual- clutch automatic transmission is standard, and allwheel drive is optional.

Like the A-Class hatch, the A sedan is fairly well equipped for a base Mercedes. LED headlights and daytime running lights, a panoramic sunroof, automatic braking and Mercedes’ slick MBUX infotainment system are all stand- ard. Base A-Class sedans roll on 17-inch wheels, while 18s are optional.

Canadian pricing and availability are still up in the air, but expect the A-Class sedan to hit dealers by the end of this year. For a better idea of what to expect from the A sedan, check our review of the hatch on Driving.ca.
