Trudeau’s day of reconciliation looks like costly proposal

-

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has finally hit the bell on the stupid meter at the fairgrounds with his proposal for an annual native reconciliation holiday.

How much will that cost all businesses, but particularly small entrepreneurs who need to open every day just to eke out a living?

Now, they will have to pay employees not to work, while also not having any income from that day?

And the reason? For four per cent of Canada’s population and its interpretation of the “sins of the father” from 150 years ago?

We need to unseat Trudeau. Federal Conservative leader Andrew Scheer also needs to tell us why we should vote for his party or he should resign as well. Bill Davis, New Westminster

Where’s the consequence?

An Indigenous leader at Camp Cloud called a younger white man “white trash.”

How can these people spread such prejudice and hatred with no consequence?

If I said something similar on the TV news, I would be charged with spreading hate. I guess this is what you get when one race of people is given more rights due to their heritage than the people who built this country. Mark Wolrich, North Vancouver

We must get beyond past

It is a pleasure to see so many people standing up and taking offence at the statue of Sir John A. Macdonald being taken down.

He may have had his faults, but he was a great Canadian and native peoples should celebrate his vision of Canada, which likely kept them from becoming part of the U.S.

Murderers and all kinds of despicable criminals get a maximum of 25 years, after which they are supposed to have paid their debt to society and are forgiven.

Can our forefathers not be given the same benefit, especially since their actions and words were considered acceptable for their times?

Reconciliation is also about getting beyond the past. Perry Coleman, Delta

What about those crows?

Everyone is expressing concern about the couple of thousand Canada geese in Vancouver, to the point that addling eggs is being considered. But has anyone noticed the thousands of crows living and multiplying in Vancouver?

We have flocks of crows covering trees, lining telephone wires and roof gutters.

Crow droppings are all over our boulevards, yards, sidewalks and parked cars.

Still Creek in Burnaby is crow haven for the Lower Mainland. Why is the city not taking action to reduce the ever-increasing number of crows? Olga Kudyba, North Vancouver

Statue a testament to vision

We all make mistakes. I suspect every prime minister has made mistakes.

Should we refuse to allow statues of all prime ministers?

Sir John A. Macdonald thought he was helping Indigenous children to become educated. The statue of him is a testament to his vision and accomplishment in uniting us as one country.

Removing the statue seems to be a case of Victoria council being subservient to the squeaky wheel. Dale Laird, Vancouver

Go hunt in Russia

If Donald Trump Jr. must hunt, he should consider hunting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Russia where he would be more welcome than in Canada. Rick Cregg, Chilliwack
